Find the center point of the wood faceplate, marking from corner to corner with a pencil. This point will be used when drilling to align the wood to the cast-iron faceplate of your lathe. Using the dimensions in the template diagram, mark the holes for the dowels that will fit the hinge holes, and hold the lids to the faceplate assembly. For this technique to be safe and efficient, the wood has to be sound, without splits or cracks that could allow the wood to separate from the faceplate assembly. If you’re uncertain about the soundness, an additional screw can be used through the faceplate, firmly anchoring the wood. This is also a good option if you’re unsure of your ability to turn the wood without digging in too abruptly with the lathe chisels.
